"The World is a book, and those who do not travel read only a page." - St. Augustine

Our first stop beyond Rome was the town of Viterbo.
About an hour or so north of Rome by rail, Viterbo is a
great little city with a strong medieval heart. We stayed
just inside the walls, at the Bed and Breakfast Santa Rosa.
The B&B was run by two women who also own a small
publishing company; they gave us several of their kids
books in Italian. "For little kids," they said. "And for you."
We got our first taste of the pleasant Italian habit of passagiare...essentially walking
around the town during the evening. It seemed that the whole of Viterbo was wandering
the streets until well past midnight...and we were right there with them. We were only in
the town for one day, but we really enjoyed Viterbo. Here are some pictures from our
stay. As always...click on any picture to see it enlarged.
The first in a long series of JW's pictures of towers and curving Italian alleyways.

We wandered around the town for the afternoon. We attempted to go out to a hot
springs, but darkness was falling and we were walking, so we turned back. This is
not the last time that a fruitless search for hot springs will make an appearance in our
trip. Even so, we enjoyed the afternoon. Viterbo has lots of old and beautiful
churches, and a twisting warren or roads to loose yourself in. So we did just that.
