Siena:  The Town
"Open my heart, and you will see,
Graved inside of it - Italy."

Siena combines so many  of the things that we love about Italian cities and towns:  the
passagiare; the old men with small dogs; cafe in the mid-morning and afternoon wine
in the piazza; tight old alleys that tuck away their surprises; time that falls slowly,
minute to minute in an ancient and unhurried pace; the early clatter of high heels on
old cobblestones and the late-night gutter of scooters.  We spent a lot of time
wandering around Siena, enjoying the city, and becoming possessed by it.
The big vista pictures...the Siena that needed a panoramic lens that we didn't have.

By the time we left we were feeling proprietary about our Siena. We found ourselves
sniffing at the weekly waves of tourists who came tumbling off of their buses and into
the streets...those passing vacationers set on "doing Siena" in a day.  We began to
develop off-map habits and paths and found growing relationships with neighbors
and shop owners.  We began to feel...Sienese.
