Italy 2008
Siena:  The People
"Strangers are just friends waiting to happen."
- Rod McKuen
We were blessed in our trip to make several good friends, whom we find ourselves
missing very much.  Some were classmates, while some were chance encounters.
Here are some of the people who made our stay in Siena special:
Roly Darby:  Roly quit his
ad agency job and came to
Italy to try to find himself.
He planned to take enough
classes to speak passable
Italian, and then he hoped
to find a job and stay.  A
constant source of
entertainment and thought,
Roly is a premier story
teller.  We can't wait to go
back to Europe just to hang
out with him some more.

We love you, dude!
Alexis Webster:  Alexis
was having a summer
in Italy before starting
law school in the fall.
Alexis was staying with
a lady who charged
only minimal rent in
return for English
lessons...we were all
envious.

Good luck at Dexel!
Vicky:  One of our
flat-mates, Vicky was
having an Italian fling
before starting her Ph.D.
She already spoke good
Italian, but was spending
the summer improving
on it.  To save money she
was living mostly on
canned soup, which
seemed like heresy to us.
Our Class, sans Roly (Left to Right):
Laura:  a sunglasses sales rep from Vancouver
Us
Alexis
Roberta (St. Roberta):  our teacher, and a woman of extreme
patience.
Kristeen and Cathlene:  two friends from Rochester who
decided they wanted to come to Siena and learn Italian.  Their
husbands joined them towards the end of the two weeks.
Jon Cockburn:  A professor of Design Theory from Australia,
Jon is marreid to a Sienese professor of political science.
Not all friends are new
friends!  To our delight,
TJ was able to come join
us in Siena for some
biking and for the Palio.
Anywhere, anytime...TJ is
outstanding company.
