Italy 2008
The Trip
"There are no foreign lands.  It is the
traveler only who is foreign."
- Robert Louis Stevenson
In 2006 we took a three week trip to Italy (you can see that trip here).  We enjoyed it
so much that we almost immediately began plotting to return.  Last summer
Vanessa was in Costa Rica, so we decided that 2008 was our time.  We planned
for a year, and had a wonderful, albeit occasionally hectic, time.  JW accepted a
head coaching position at King College in Bristol, TN just before we left, so parts of
the trip were dedicated to house buying, house selling and job hunting for Vanessa.
Even with those distractions, we had a brilliant time and made some great friends.

We took 2 weeks of Italian classes in Siena, watched one of Europe's oldest horse
races, saw the sassi in Matera and the ruins of Herculaneum.  We drank Pims in the
Campo, lay on the cathedral steps at midnight, and walked through the Monster
Garden of Bomarzo.  We were blessed with a fantastic trip, and we're happy to
share our memories with you here.  Click on the map below to get started!
"For us to go to Italy and to penetrate into Italy is like a most fascinating act of self-
discovery—back, back down the old ways of time. Strange and wonderful chords
awake in us, and vibrate again after many hundreds of years of complete
forgetfulness."
