Italy 2008
Bari
"Sciopero."
- a large number of people
From Bomarzo we headed south again, down to the bottom of Italy...to Bari.  A
seaport with a small, warren-like ancient center, Bari was a much bigger city than we
had been in for a while.  It was a bit of a shock.  We spent several days in Bari, not
doing much of anything.  We shopped, we walked around, and we looked in vain for
the aquarium.  We saw a traveling Harry Potter exhibit with book cover art from
around the world, and we had some good seafood.  Bari was a pleasant little stop for
us, but soon we would be off to Matera, and the Sassi.  But we did get a few pictures.
After a couple of nights in Bari we were ready to be off, but not before we took care of
some business.  Vanessa did a phone interview from a public phone and internet
cafe on our way out of town (we thought).  She thought it went well...and it probably
did.  The interview was with Kingsport City Schools, who offered her a job later that
evening.  After the interview we headed to the train station, where we learned a new
line that ran to Matera was in the middle of a strike.  What was interesting to us was
that everyone we talked to about it seemed to take it in stride.
Sciopero, with a
shrug...as if to say "These things happen."  Thats basically what we got from our hotel
when we checked back in.  These things happen.

But it seemed to be a short strike, because we were able to catch the train in the
morning, and then we were off to Matera.

One of Bari's claims to fame is as the home, and
final resting place, of St. Nicholas.  Thats
right...Santa doesn't live at the north pole.  He
lives in the crypt of the St. Nicholas Cathedral in
Bari.  The cathedral is a beautiful church, and the
crypt and reliquary exude that cool, ancient
spirituality that we felt two years ago at the tomb
of St. Francis.
There was a wedding in the cathedral just before we arrived, and we got to
watch the happy couple exit the church to the cheers of friends and family.
